Inhaber des Lehrstuhls für Geobotanik und Landschaftsökologie und Direktor des Instituts für Botanik und Botanischer Garten von 1992 bis 2006. Prof. Succow etablierte die Landschaftsökologie in Greifswald.

1997 erhielt er den Alternativer Nobelpreis der Right Livelihood Award Foundation in Stockholm. Das Preisgeld bildete den finanziellen Grundstock der Michael Succow Stiftung zum Schutz der Natur.
